Jack Wilkinson of Huntington, WV will give an interpretation of Lincoln.

At the end of January, the Olive Hill Historical Society began thinking of ways to celebrate the Lincoln Bi-centennial.  There were a few ideas hashed around.  We wanted to do something entirely different.  A very “big” idea developed, the idea of building a cabin similar to Lincoln’s boyhood home in Kentucky.  There was no one else that we could find in the nation, let alone in Kentucky who was doing this particular project.  Therefore, Carter County’s project would be unique.  After finding out about our bold idea there were some who did not want this project to take place in Carter County and wanted it to take place in other parts of the state; but, determined, we are forging ahead knowing that this idea will turn into something we can be proud of and that Abraham Lincoln will look down upon with a “wink” and thumbs up.  We know that the entire building process and completed structure will offer much in the way of educational opportunities and inspiration to others.

Many grants had already been given out.  Unfortunately, our idea came after the grant deadlines had passed.  Still we did not back down or shrink from the task, thinking where there is a will there is a way.  We weighed the monumental assignment against all the good results it would produce.

Our first problem it seemed was in acquiring a location.  We waited and stalled somewhat after talking to various people and  hearing that we would have to wade through a mountain of red tape in getting to build the cabin at Carter Caves.  Then we simply bit the bullet and wrote a simple email with our proposal to the Department of Parks.  To our astonishment we received a speedy reply from the park director, who loved the idea, giving us the go ahead.  This was a very good day as our first major hurdle was crossed.

But as anyone knows with construction projects, there would be more problems or rather opportunities, ahead.  The next major step would be acquiring the logs.  After various inquiries we found someone who would donate some very old logs anonymously.  Still transportation and hauling would be involved.  After examination, only a very small portion of these logs could be used..  Ideally, we would need new freshly cut logs.  Wanting this to be a Carter County project we approached Globe Hardwood with our plight.  They agreed to give us pine logs with a hand-hewn look cut at their cost with free delivery.  During the first week of July these logs are to be delivered.  Globe Hardwood is also extending us credit to raise the money for this project.

Help support this project by Buying a Log!  You may buy as many logs as you like at $80 per log or give what you can.  The list has been growing.  Add your log today.  Recognition for those donating logs will be given.  You may donate in the memory of a loved one if you wish.  Make your tax deductible donation today!

See the photo gallery section to watch the progress of the cabin!

We are doing this project on a song and a prayer.  More people are offering support everyday.  There are many individual volunteers but we need more.  Organizations have stepped forward to offer help, some of which are the Carter County Homemakers, The Friends of Carter Caves, and The Boy Scouts in Lewis County.  Please add your name to the growing list.  We also welcome any businesses who want to lend their support.
